Newark History Society
The Newark History Society aims to expand knowledge of Newarks past so that we may better understand the City’s present and future prospects. Settled by Puritans in 1666, Newark has a rich and textured history as one of Americas great cities. Its legacy of urban development, decay, and rebirth includes industrial innovation, outstanding contributions to the arts and literature, religious and ethnic diversity, political controversy, and the assimilation of immigrant and migrant groups. Founded in 2002, the Newark History Society organizes regular public programs and encourages new research. Most of our events are held at the New Jersey Historical Society or the Newark Public Library; they are free and open to the public.
