Remembering the 1951 Woodbridge Train Wreck

In 2021, Gordon Bond released the second edition of his book about the wreck of the Pennsylvania Railroad's express commuter train "The Broker" on February 6, 1951. With 85 killed and hundreds injured, it remains New Jersey's deadliest rail disaster. While he was able to collect the names of the dead and injured, along with additional back stories, many people have come forward since with new information that had not made it into the printed books. Some were able to be incorporated into the second edition, but new information s still coming out. This page is set up to gather those stories, corrections, and additional information. This way it is available for the public and historians until it may be published in a third edition in the future.

Memorials to The Broker

There are three public memorials to The Broker in Woodbridge Township. A monument is located at the northeast corner of where Main Street passes beneath the train bridge. A plaque was erected near the southwest corner of where Legion Place meets Fulton Street, near the wreck site. An interpretive marker was installed with others about Township history at Heard's Brook Park near School Street.

The idea of creating a public memorial began in 1993 when amateur historian and wreck witness Frank LaPenta held a special forum where survivors and witnesses shared their experiences. He, and his wife, Audrey LaPenta, headed a committee of the Historical Association of Woodbridge Township, looking to commemorate the then-upcoming 50th anniversary of the wreck in 2001. Woodbridge Councilman Charles Kenney, spearheaded getting township funding and New Jersey Transit agreed to have a bronze plaque cast. LaPenta and his committee organized a memorial service at the First Methodist Church on Main Street. It was a fitting venue—its doors had been thrown open as an information nerve center that night. On February 4, 2001, LaPenta unveiled the plaque.

Dedication of the installed monument was delayed by the events of September 11, 2001. On August 24, 2002, a crowd gathered on the Main Street sidewalk under the train bridge. The focus was the monument, covered by a black cloth and a single red rose. Jeff Huber, then-president of the Historical Association, welcomed everyone and First Methodist Church pastor, Rev. David Housten, offered the invocation. Speakers included then-mayor, Frank Pelzman, Councilman Charles Kenney, and Assemblyman John Wizniewski. Frank LaPenta took one corner of the black cloth and wreck survivor Pearl Selinger the other, officially unveiling the monument to applause. The location was chosen to afford greater visibility to the public along Main Street.

Author Gordon Bond (left) with Frank LaPenta at the monument. Frank passed away July 14, 2021, age 90.

The Broker plaque was erected at the wreck site in time for the 70th anniversary in 2021. Video from the dedication can be seen here.

The interpretive marker at Heard's Brook Park was installed by the Woodbridge Township Historic Preservation Commission in 2013.

It was compiled from a wide variety of sources: newspaper lists, newspaper interviews, information from family etc. The worse of the damage was to the first four or five cars. Passenger in those cars further along may have been jolted, but were unhurt and many simply walked off the train, leaving no particular record of having been on it. This is where family members relating the stories of their relatives who may have been onboard is important.
